Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research is a relatively new and very exciting field of research. While every cell in the human body contains the information necessary to produce any part of that body, most cells have become specialized in function and therefore cannot actually do so. However, stem cells are special in that they are not limited in the way that ordinary cells are, but are theoretically able to produce new cells of any type found in the body.

Stem cell research is controversial because stem cells have historically been difficult to find or produce, and one source of stem cells is the bodies of children slain at early stages in their mother's wombs. However, scientists have now discovered a variety of sources for stem cells, such that there is no clinical need to use stem cells acquired from the bodies of aborted infants.

As stem cell research has progressed, it has become clear – quite apart from the moral issues involved – that results gained from research using adult stem cells have far outpaced those produced from research using embryonic stem cells.

Research performed using embryonic stem cells will, whether it succeeds or not, create a market for human embryos – the bodies of slain infants. This is a hideous thing, and must be averted. The goal of such research – finding medical cures for a variety of diseases – does not justify the slaughter of our offspring, nor is it hindered by the prohibition thereof. Stem cell research is a field we must continue to research; embryonic stem cell research is another issue altogether, and ought to be left behind as we seek to help the weak without sacrificing the defenseless...
